Loch Dunmore

Loch Dunmore near Pitlochry
Loch Dunmore is a small loch in the Faskally woods just outside Pitlochry. It is an easy walk from town or there is a car park on site. Loch Dunmore can be quite a special spot at the right time of year with lilies on the loch and stunning colours on the rhododendrons on the banks. Unfortunately we keep taking photographs in winter! Full post here.

Loch Faskally and Pitlochry Boating Station

Loch Faskally
Loch Faskally is the loch in Pitlochry which was created by the damming of the River Tummel in the 1950s. There are a number of walks in the area of the loch including the longer loop taking in Loch Dunmore, the Garry Bridge, Killiecrankie and the Linn of Tummel.  Full post here.

Pitlochry dam and fishladder

Pitlochry dam and fishladder
The Pitlochry dam was constructed in the 1950’s as part of a massive expansion of the hydroelectric network of dams and power stations that now serves much of the Scottish Highlands. The network is impressive and the remote nature of some of the large power stations is barely believable. Falls of Bruar

Falls of Bruar
The Falls of Bruar is another very accessible short walk that takes in some classic Highland Perthshire woodland and waterfall scenery. The walk up the steep hill behind the House of Bruar leads through lovely Atholl Estates woodland to a number of impressive cascading falls. See our full post here.

Inverness and Rocpool Restaurant

Inverness Castle
Inverness is the nearest city to the north of Pitlochry. An excellent little city providing great access to the far north and, more importanly, it is home to our favourite restuarant, Rocpool on the river. If you do visit Inverness, lunch in Rocpool is a must. If you get lucky with your table, you might even have a view of the castle. See our full blog post here.

Pitlochry Train Station

Pitlochry Train Station
Many Knockendarroch guests arrive in Piltochry by train and we are very lucky that there is a rather lovely Victorian station on our doorstep. The footbridge and waiting rooms were recently refurbished and look as good as new. Full blog post here.

Linn of Tummel – leaping salmon

The Linn of Tummel is a series of pools and waterfalls at the junction of the River Tummel and the River Garry. This is a stunning spot with classic Perthshire scenery. Access is relatively easy on a 1km path from the Garry Bridge. Full post here.

Bridge over the River Garry

River Garry from The Garry Bridge
A couple of miles north of Pitlochry on the old road is a left hand turn that leads down to The Queens View and Lochs Tummel and Rannoch. Just as you turn the corner you cross the River Garry on a mighty impressive bridge. There is a car park on the other side of the bridge and it is work a quick stop to take in the views. Full post here.

Black Spout Waterfall

Black spout waterfall and woods
The Black Spout wood is a lovely oak woodland on the edge of Pitlochry. Easily accessed from near the rail bridge at the south end of town a path leads up the hill to the famous Black Spout Waterfall and shortly after the it emerges at Edradour Distillery. It is a short walk and a good route up to the distillery. Full post here.

Carn Liath – Beinn a Ghlo

Carn-Liath
Carn Liath is the lowest of the three munros in the Beinn a Ghlo range and is one of our favourite local hills. Sitting high above Blair Atholl it is seen clearly from the A9 as the hill rising above the iconic whitewashed walls of Blair Castle. The scar of the footpath up the South face can be seen for miles both up and down the A9. Full post here.

Ben Vrackie

Ben Vrackie
Sitting almost on top of Pitlochry, Ben Vrackie is a lovely Corbett in the immediate vicinity of Knockendarroch and well worth the hike up. On a clear day the summit is a superb vantage point with views taking in the Cairngorms to the north, The Beinn a Ghlo range to the north-west and Schiehallion and Glencoe to the west in the distance. Full post here.

Braemar Castle

Braemar Castle
Not far outside Braemar is Braemar Castle. Built as a grand hunting lodge on the banks of the River Dee in 1628 by the Earl of Mar, the castle has been the seat of the Chiefs of Clan Farquarson since the 1800’s. Full post here.

Balmoral Castle

Balmoral Castle
Balmoral Castle is close to Braemar in Royal Deeside and around a one hour drive from Pitlochry.
